A single editorial backlink from a real, relevant website costs between $150 and $600 in 2026. Bulk packages advertise links at $2 to $5 each. The gap between those two numbers is not a discount — they are different products, and only one of them is a link on a page a person might read.

This is what we found surveying 722 link building services listed on a public marketplace in September 2026, alongside published agency rates for the same year. Every figure below is a market observation, not a quote from us.

Link building pricing at a glance

What you are buying Market price Price per link
Editorial guest post, mid-authority site $220 – $600 $220 – $600
Editorial guest post, high-authority site $350 – $1,000 $350 – $1,000
Niche edit (link inserted into an existing article) $150 – $450 $150 – $450
Local citation / business directory listing $0.50 – $3.20 $0.50 – $3.20
Bulk "foundation" package $199 – $899 $2 – $5
Automated blast ("10,000 backlinks") $6 – $15 under $0.01

The average guest post price in the United States in 2026 is around $459, up roughly 7.5% year on year.

Cost per backlink: the market splits into two bands

This is the part that surprised us. Sorting every link product on that marketplace by price per link produced two clusters and an empty middle:

  • $2.00 to $4.49 per link — every volume package
  • $119.80 to $449 per link — every editorial placement

There is no $20 link. There is no $50 link. The gap is roughly tenfold and almost nothing sits inside it.

That tells you something useful: price per link is not a dial, it is a category label. When a seller quotes you $3 a link, they have not found a cheaper way to do the expensive thing. They are selling a different thing, and the number of links is the product.

What the cheap band actually delivers

We buy from bulk suppliers ourselves, to resell, and we check every URL before a report reaches a customer. That verification is where the price bands stop being abstract.

On one order we received a file listing 306 pages. Fetching each one, zero resolved to a live link. We re-sampled hours later in case of indexing lag — still zero. The order had been marked complete.

On another, a supplier reported 1,200 links. 612 pages existed and 300 of them carried a link. The customer was told 1,200.

We are not publishing this to attack a vendor — we are not naming one. We are publishing it because it is the only honest answer to "why is that pack so cheap", and because the failure is invisible unless somebody fetches every URL. A CSV of 306 rows looks identical whether the pages exist or not.

Link building cost versus the rest of your SEO budget

Links are only one line item. Published 2026 rates for the surrounding work:

Service Typical US agency price
On-page SEO project $375 – $2,500
Technical SEO audit $3,000 – $15,000
Monthly SEO retainer $1,000 – $5,000
Local / Google Business Profile management $300 – $1,500 per month

Agencies outside the US and Western Europe commonly deliver the same scope for 40–60% less, which is the entire reason offshore SEO exists. That is a real difference in cost base, not in method — and it is the one legitimate way a price can be genuinely lower rather than differently defined.

What should a backlink cost? Price-check a quote in two minutes

  1. Divide the price by the link count. Under roughly $20 per link, you are buying submissions — profiles, bookmarks, directories, web 2.0 pages — not editorial placements. That can be a reasonable purchase. It is not the same purchase.
  2. Ask for live URLs, not a number. A count is a claim. A URL is checkable. Any seller unwilling to list them at delivery is asking you to take the count on trust.
  3. Check a sample yourself. Open five URLs from the report and search the page for your domain. This takes two minutes and catches the failure mode above.
  4. Ask what happens when a link disappears. Links drop — sites get redesigned, posts get pruned. A replacement policy with a stated window is normal; no answer at all is a signal.
  5. Be suspicious of authority numbers without a source. If a seller quotes DA or DR, ask which tool and when it was measured. Metrics quoted without provenance are decoration.

Frequently asked questions

Why is backlink pricing so inconsistent between sellers? Because "a backlink" is not one product. Two quotes can differ by a factor of a hundred and both be honest, because one is an article a site owner agreed to publish and the other is a form submission. Backlink pricing only becomes comparable once you fix what is being delivered — ask both sellers for the page type and a sample URL, then compare.

How much does a backlink cost if I only want one? One editorial placement on a real, relevant site is $150 to $600 depending on the site's authority and how willing its owner is to publish. There is no volume discount at a quantity of one, so this is the cleanest way to see the true unit price of the thing you are actually buying.

Is a $5 backlink ever worth buying? Sometimes, if you know what it is. Profile, directory and bookmark links add diversity to a link profile and cost accordingly. They do not move competitive rankings on their own, and buying them expecting editorial results is where people feel cheated.

Why do editorial links cost so much more? Because a person writes an article and a site owner agrees to publish it. That is two humans and an editorial decision. The price reflects the site owner's willingness to publish, which is exactly what makes the link worth having.

Do more expensive links rank better? Not reliably. Relevance and placement matter at least as much as price or authority score. A $200 link on a site in your industry usually outperforms a $600 link on a general news site with no topical connection.

What should a small business budget? For most small sites the useful starting point is one or two editorial placements plus on-page work — roughly $500 to $1,500 — rather than a thousand cheap links. Fixing what is on your own pages is generally cheaper than trying to out-link a competitor.
